Welcome to WAITEblog!
OK…I’ve wanted to add a discussion forum of some type to the site for a long time. I’m hoping this “flavor” will work. PLEASE make some posts…let me know how easy or difficult it is for you to use…let me know of any problems. This will be very helpful to all of our research if we get your specific questions in a forum that we can all view and respond to. There is no limit to what you post here…including your lines…data you’ve extracted…transcriptions or photos you want to share. Let’s wear it out to see if we want to keep it. Thanks, Sue

Here’s a tip for posting the WAITEblog. If you’re copying and pasting from a file…first save to a text editor like notepad to remove all of the formatting BEFORE you paste to your blog or page entry. (You’ll save yourself lots of agita from the formatting changing everytime you look at the post.) Once you’ve pasted your plain text you can reformat for easy legibility from inside the WordPress editor. If you have a LOT to share…post your information as a Page. Sue

Several years ago while visiting the New England Geneological Society in Boston, I asked for books or information on the Waite Famiy. My great grandmother’s name according to family legend was: Ida Maude Miranda Kate, Victoria Queen Minerva Waite- Curtin Bradley. My grandmother told me that the Waite family went back to the Mayflower.
While looking through a book entitled: “Benjamin Waite- Ohio Pioneer” I found t he name of my grandmother: Hazel (Waite) Curtin Bradley. The geneology in this book traced the name Benjamin Waite back about 5 generations to Massachusetts.
Included was Benjamin Waite “Hero of the Connecticut Valley” who was killed and buried in a mass grave at the Deerfield Massacre in 1704.
Benjamin was from Hatfield, Mass., quite likely the one listed in the Waite geneology going back to Thomas. Ida Maude…etc went to Oregon. Her daugther,my grandmother, married into the Dr. Benjamin Franklin Russell family. Russell was officer in the 10th NJ Volunteers in the Civil War and went west to Oregon where he was a doctor in the McKenzie River Valley until 1903. We are having a Russell family tour and reunion at the old family homestead on July 28,
2007.

Take a look at the Waite Family geneology (a large chart) prepared by the New England Geneological Society. It is in Boston and also at the special collection at the Library of Congress in Washington,DC.
It takes the Waite family all the way back to the Germanic Kings, through Charlamagne, and down to two Waites in Massachusetts. Same Waite family?
Check it out.

I live in Melbourne, Australia
My father migrated from Wales to Australia in the early 1950’s from Chepstow, Wales, UK. Info on the family is vague and limited. He was born in 1918. His mothers name was Lily May Waite. I don’t know much more apart from Lily being one of about nine children. can you offer any advice or info on where I can find more about the family?
Many thanks

Janet, I’d check first for his death certificate. This may give you specific information on his parents. Next I’d check at the Wales GenWeb site at http://www.walesgenweb.com/. I’d spend some time exploring their resources. From here there will be many people to direct you more specifically within the country. Since you know his county of origin you should be able to track down his birth certificate and perhaps other documents pertaining to his family. This should give specifics on his mother and father. Armed with this information you’ll be able to work backward through the generations. I’m sorry that I do not have specific information in my database. Good Luck!

Hi to you all, especially Janet Harris (Waite), I am a Wait(e), but still living in England. I see that you cover British Wait(e)s too and I thought that you might be interested in some FREE to view sites on this side of the Atlantic. I actually transcribe written/scanned images for 2 of them (volunteers are welcome). These sites are http://www.freebmd.org.uk General Records Office Births Marriages and Deaths from the 3rd Qtr of 1837 onwards, currently up to the early 1900s. http://www.freereg.org.uk, Church registers and Bishop’s transcriptions various counties are in progress, lots of volunteers needed! and http://www.freecen.org.uk. 1881 is already free (LDS site) and the UK Government 1901 census, single search name free, household view on prepayment. There are 2 other sites which are even more interesting and more detailed, http://www.bathbmd.org.uk, the local record office for Bath and NE Somerset from 3rd qtr 1837, progressing very quickly, and http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk, also progressing. These last two give the option of an online ordering facility for copies of official birth, marriage and death certificates! these http://www.countybmd.org.uk are being expanded to other counties, see http://www.ukbmd.org.uk for details. I did a quick search for a Lily marrying a Waite from 1900 to 1918 and got 3 hits, no Lily Mae though. Lily Farnham, Taylor or Hodge and finally Erasmus. They married Ernest Bertram, Philip C and Sydney J respectively. I hope that this information helps all of your Family History researchers. My own family (Great Grandfather William Wait) I’ve traced back to Farmborough Somerset c 1820. Happy browsing of these site to you all.

Lots of Waites (or Waits) lived in Dixfield, Maine from the early 1800s to the mid-1900s. The Dixfield Historical Society has lots of mentions of Harvey Wait, William Wait, Lucy Wait, Margaret Wait, etc., none of the mentions currently catalogued though. But, if any WaitBlog user wants information on any specific Dixfield Wait, please contact me and I will do research there for free. I am the DHS historian.

I am doing some research for a Waite descendant and need information on the 1st wife of Yelverton Wait (1743-1816, Rev War Major, Rhode Island). She was Margaret Whitford. Apparently they were divorced. Yelverton is buried with his 2nd wife Zipporah Colvin but Margaret has disappeared. I suspect a 2nd marriage and name change for her.

I am still in England (Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire) with my Wait(e) family. I found your site and think it’s just wonderful. Right now, I’m still stuck in the very early 1800’s in England with William Waite & Mary Anne Jenkins. I decend from their son John, b. abt. 1810. It is slow going because as you reference all the “junk” gedcoms out there, I’m attempting to document every entry along the way. I will certainly keep this site in mind; I do not know how many, if any, of John’s brothers & sisters or children came to the US.
Thanks for providing a terrific resource that I will bookmark for future reference!
